The faculty offers a Philosophy degree program (bachelor, major and minor) and an interfaculty study of religion program (bachelor, major). The faculty also contributes substantially to the intercollegiate philosophy/ethics teacher training program, and its teaching provides many services to other faculties.
Research in philosophy focuses on ancient philosophy, Renaissance philosophy, German idealism, metaphysics, philosophy of mind, epistemology, political philosophy, and ethics. A further focus is on the field of logic and philosophy of science, which deals with formal and philosophical logic, fundamental philosophical principles, and the general methodology of formal and empirical science. The faculty participates in the intra-faculty Münchner Kompetenzzentrum Ethik (Munich Ethics Referral Center – MKE) and the Munich Center for Neurosciences – Brain and Mind (LMUinnovativ). It is also involved in two Collaborative Research Centers funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), Reflexive Modernization and Pluralization and Authority in the Early Modern Period, and in the postgraduate program Politics – Law – Philosophy (PRP), which addresses globalization and international justice.
Study of Religion places special attention on the theory and methodology of the study of religion, Buddhism, and the history of religion in Europe.
