LMU Munich’s success in the Germany-wide Excellence Initiative has confirmed the university’s outstanding research record, particularly in the field of fundamental research. However, the competitive position of LMU Munich is also shown by the fact that it is regularly rated at the top end of national and international rankings. Research funding is a critical factor in a university's success and a significant indicator of the strength of its research. LMU Munich attracts a wide range of research funding at regional, national, and European levels. Key sources of research funding are the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the European Union.
By implementing university-wide strategy processes, LMU Munich has succeeded in permanently enhancing its profile as a research-intensive university.
