Center for Neuropathology and Prion Research (ZNP)

Clinical neuropathology at the ZNP is chiefly concerned with the pathologenesis and genetics of brain tumors and neurodegenerativedisorders. Experimental neuropathology focuses on studies in transgenic mouse models with a view to understanding the cause and course of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, prion-based conditions such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, the origins of brain tumors and the search for effective therapies for neurodegenerative illnesses. The ZNP also plays a coordinating role in BrainNet, a network of European brain banks which collect brain tissues and make them available to researchers. ZNP also serves as the Reference Center for Prion Diseases and Neurodegenerative Disorders within the German Association for Neuropathology and Neuroanatomy.
