LMU-Harvard Young Scientists’ Forum 2011
The third LMU-Harvard Young Scientists’ Forum (YSF) will be held at LMU on 26 - 30 June 2011. The Forum provides outstanding junior researchers from both universities with a platform for an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and the planning of collaborative projects. This year the 30 invited doctoral students and postdocs will be joined by established experts in the fields of protein research and neuroscience. The Forum’s motto is “From Molecules to Organisms”. The first conference in the series was held at LMU in 2009, and a similarly structured meeting was convened at Harvard University in the following year. This time around, the YSF returns to the Center for Advanced Studies at LMU.
The conference is designed to give a select group of young researchers, chosen from among the most gifted doctoral students and postdocs at LMU and Harvard University, the opportunity to present their projects and findings in thematically organized workshops. Established investigators with wide experience in the fields in question will be on hand to offer suggestions and tips for further advances and future research directions.
A series of Faculty Lectures, which will be given in English by eight renowned researchers drawn from the staffs of both universities, will offer insights into current developments and problems in the areas of protein research and neuroscience. Among other topics, these presentations will deal with innovative optogenetic methods, which provide ways of using light to activate genes and enzymes in living systems. Other talks recapitulate the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease, and scrutinize the impact of synaptic plasticity on the function of neuronal circuits in the cerebral cortex. The lectures are also open to other interested parties. Since space is limited, those planning to attend are kindly requested to register in advance.
This year‘s Young Scientists’ Forum is directed by Professor Benedikt Grothe, Director of the Munich Center of Neurosciences (MCN), and Professor Dirk Trauner of the Center for Integrated Protein Science Munich (CIPSM), an LMU Center of Excellence, together with colleagues from Harvard.
