THE Ranking 2013
LMU again leads the German contingent
In the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking, LMU is rated best among the German contenders in the top 100 on the list – for the third time in a row. Once again, LMU also makes a good showing in the wider European context. In addition to LMU (55), the following German universities are included among the top 100: Göttingen (63), Heidelberg (68), the Free University of Berlin (86), the Technical University of Munich (87) and the Humboldt University in Berlin (94).
As well as assigning an overall score to each university, the evaluation exercise also ranks them in terms of individual subject groups. Here too, LMU performs well, occupying top place among its German peers in Physical Sciences (19), Arts and Humanities (21), Life Sciences (35) and Social Sciences (58).
The ranking encompasses 400 universities worldwide, chosen on the basis of a preselection procedure. In the THE ranking, the evaluation of a university‘s core activities – research and teaching – contributes most to its placing in the final list. This assessment is primarily based on the number and quality of the publications produced, the quality of teaching provided and the university’s reputation for research. The diversity and internationality of an institution’s students and academic staff, and its level of success in technology transfer are also factored into the final score.
