Historical Tour Oktoberfest 2018
For the 185th Oktoberfest, the LMU Gateway team decided to host a historical tour of the Oktoberfest with an accredited city guide. On Sunday, September 23, historian Georg Reichlmayr revealed many facets of the Oktoberfest’s past to the 22 tour participants, made up of international researchers and their families.
Having originated as a horse race to celebrate the wedding of Ludwig of Bavaria and Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen in 1810, the Oktoberfest evolved across the centuries to become the world-famous Volksfest that we know today. Georg Reichlmayr provided interesting insights about the target audiences of the different beer tents and the different regional costumes. He also pointed out that the international spirit and the desire to celebrate together no matter where you come from, makes the Oktoberfest such an extraordinary occasion.
We would like to thank all our participants, and hope that they have discovered something new about Munich’s most famous Volkfest.
