Guide for applying to study pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine (international applicants)

The number of international students wishing to pursue a degree in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and pharmacy is exceedingly high. As medical degrees are included in the national allocation procedure, international students first need to find out which institution is responsible for handling their application: The Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (Foundation for University Admissions) or the university at which you wish to study.

This depends in turn upon which semester you wish to apply for, and also on your nationality. In addition, you will need to pay attention to the following special regulations:

“Bildungsinländer” fall into the same admission class as German nationals.
A “Bildungsinländer” is an international student who has acquired a university entrance qualification in Germany or at a German school abroad, or who has successfully completed a degree at a German university (requiring at least 6 semesters).
-> You will need to apply to the SfH (Foundation for University Admissions) via www.hochschulstart.de.

Family members of an EU/ECR citizen who are resident in the Federal Republic of Germany fall into the same admission class as German applicants,
provided said citizen lives and is employed in the Federal Republic of Germany.
-> You will need to apply to the SfH (Foundation for University Admissions) via www.hochschulstart.de

Applying for the first semester

German, EU/ECR, and Bildungsinländer applicants

If your country requires you to take a supplementary examination before studying medicine, you must pass this examination before applying to study medicine in Germany. If you want to study medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or pharmacy, please apply to:

-> Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung, 44128 Dortmund, phone: +49 (0)180 / 3 987 111 001, www.hochschulstart.de

Assessment of your university entrance qualification and registration:
Once you have been accepted by Hochschulstart, you will need to go to the LMU International Admissions Office to have your university entrance qualification assessed. You cannot register until you have done this.
-> Contact and opening hours of the International Admissions Department

Non-EU/ECR citizens

The national allocation procedure reserves a limited number of places for international applicants from countries outside of the EU/ECR. Universities are allowed to assign these places at their own discretion. If you would like to apply for one of these places, please submit your application before the stated deadline to the International Office of the LMU:

Applying to enter an advanced semester

EU/ECR citizens

EU/ECR citizens who have studied or are currently studying one of the above subjects at a university in Germany, and who would like to continue the same course of study at the LMU, can apply “online” to the Student Office (Unit III. 2) of the LMU for a place in the semester following on from the one they last completed. This is because such places are assigned locally, and you fall into the same admissions class as German nationals and Bildungsinländer applicants. Deadlines for submission: July 15 for the following winter semester and January 15 for the following summer semester.

Non-EU/ECR citizens

International applicants from a non-EU country who have studied or are currently studying one of the above subjects at a university in Germany, and who would like to continue the same course of study at the LMU, can apply “online” to the Student Office (Unit III. 2) of the LMU for a place in the semester following on from the one they last completed. Deadlines for submission: July 15 for the following winter semester and January 15 for the following summer semester.

Approving examinations and credits if you have already studied at a university abroad:

The following applies to all groups of applicants: If you have studied one of the above subjects at a university abroad, and you would like to apply to the LMU to continue studying in an advanced semester, the credits you have gained from the university abroad will need to be assessed by the relevant office, which will issue you with notification of transfer of credits for the semester in question. Please enclose this notification of transfer of credits when you submit your application to the Office of the Registrar at the LMU.

Applications which are based on notification of credits or on registration at another German university may only be made for advanced semesters.

The office which is responsible for officially recognising study and exam results and for issuing notification of transfer of credits depends on the subject you wish to study, and also partly on your place of residence and place of birth.
