THE Ranking 2020
LMU leads its German peers
In the World University Ranking 2020 published by the weekly magazine “Times Higher Education” (THE), LMU is once again the best placed of the German universities. Ranked 32nd in the world, it retains the position it held in last year’s table. Among the European contingent LMU takes the 8th spot, and is ranked second in continental Europe behind the ETH Zürich.
This year’s THE Ranking lists nearly 1400 universities in 92 countries, and is led by British and American institutions.
The THE World University Ranking is based primarily on the evaluation of teaching, research and citation frequency. The ranking methodology makes use of 13 performance indicators. Since 2015, the citation data used by the THE have been compiled in cooperation with Elsevier (Scopus).
LMU has also done well in three other rankings published this year. In the Nature Index 2019, which is based on the publication records of research institutions and universities in the world’s leading natural science journals, LMU was ranked 45th, making it the highest placed German university (as in the previous edition of this classification) and the only one in the top 50. In the latest Shanghai Ranking, LMU improved its position to 52nd, and in the QS World University Ranking 2020 LMU is placed 63rd overall.
