LMU again well-placed in rankings

München, 06/10/2020

The publishers of two of the leading rankings of the world’s academic institutions have released their latest findings. As in last editions of these tables, LMU has again done very well.

In the QS World University Rankings 2021, LMU is in 63rd place - as it was last year. Once again, LMU is one of only three German universities in the top 100. The leading group is made up of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as well as the Universities of Stanford and Harvard.

In the Nature Index 2020 LMU is ranked 53th which confirms LMU’s standing as Germany’s best placed university. The ranking, which was already published at the end of April, is based on the publication records of universities and research organizations in a selection of the most respected scientific journals. In comparison with its European peers, LMU occupies the 7th spot in a table that is led by Cambridge University, the ETH in Zürich and the University of Oxford. The US universities Harvard and Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continue to lead the list worldwide.

Ranking methodologies

  • The QS World University Ranking evaluates more than 1000 universities worldwide on the basis of an array of criteria. These include the institution’s academic reputation, the impact of its research publications, and its ratio of students to teaching staff.
  • The Nature Index evaluates each institutions publication record in 82 high-impact journals in the natural sciences. For further information, see the Nature Index Supplement.
