LMU best-placed German contender
In the World University Rankings 2021 issued by the magazine “Times Higher Education” (THE), LMU is once again rated the best university in Germany. In the overall ranking, LMU occupies the 32nd slot, retaining the position it held in the previous edition of this assessment. This puts LMU in 8th place in Europe, and 2nd in continental Europe (behind the ETH Zürich).
This year, the annual THE World University Rankings 2021 evaluated some 1500 universities in approximately 100 countries. The Top Three this time round are Oxford, Stanford and Harvard.
The THE’s World University Ranking assesses a total of 13 indicators, of which the quality of research and tuition, respectively, and the individual institution’s citation record, receive the greatest emphasis. In the case of the last indicator, the THE has made use of the citation data collected in Elsevier’s Scopus database since 2015.
LMU has also done very well in the latest editions of three other rankings. In the Nature Index 2020, which is based on the publication records of research organizations and universities in the world’s leading science journals, LMU also retains its position (53rd overall) as the top performer among German universities.
In the Shanghai Ranking 2020 LMU improves its position to 51st, moving up one place and defending its status as the best of German universities in this this rating exercise also. In the current QS World University Ranking 2021 LMU holds onto last year’s position (63rd).
